Tim Kopra, a brewery employee and lifelong A’s fan, takes a moment after work on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, to sip on a beer at The Good Hop in Oakland and contemplate his frustrations with the Oakland A’s recent announcement that they would not include affordable housing in their already controversial proposal for a new coliseum complex in the Port of Oakland (Anna Kenney, J110).

For a recent portrait assignment, I met up with my partner, Tim, for an after-work beer at The Good Hop in Oakland. Going into it, I wanted to do my best to capture the emotions, feelings and expressions that occur at the end of a work day. However, I quickly realized that most people go through more than one emotion as they decompress from a long day- so it was very interesting to look back on our conversation visually and see how, depending on what we were discussing, the story that the photos told varied.

This first image, for example, captured a really somber, almost heart-breaking conversation about Tim’s disappointment in the Oakland A’s. Tim has been a lifelong A’s fan, and has generally been in support of the new proposed Coliseum Complex at the Port of Oakland — but with their latest announcement to not include affordable housing units in the complex, his loyalty to the A’s is waning for the first time.

Below are a few other outtakes from the hour and a half conversation, showing the array of other emotions released after a hard day’s work:

Tim Kopra sits back and has a few laughs over a beer after a long day at work on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. As a worker in the brewing industry, he and many others in his community feel a great wave of relief as they see local beer bars and distributors coming back to life as the pandemic slows (Anna Kenney, J110).
